Which placements matter most
Sun. How each of you wants to be seen, and whether the other person recognises it. Sun contacts tend to show up as feeling understood rather than as attraction.
Moon. What you need to feel safe, and how you behave when you are tired or upset. Moon contacts are the ones people describe as feeling at home with someone, and they matter more for living together than anything else on this list.
Venus. What you find attractive and how you show affection. Venus to Mars is the contact most people mean when they talk about chemistry.
Mars. Drive, appetite and how you argue. Mars contacts explain both attraction and the shape a fight takes.
Ascendant. First impressions and physical presence. Contacts here are why some people feel familiar within a minute of meeting.
Saturn. Duration and weight. Saturn contacts are uncomfortable to read about because they describe obligation and limits, but they appear often in long marriages.
What your birth time changes
You can compare two charts without birth times and still get something useful. The Sun, Mars, Jupiter and the outer planets barely move in a day, so their contacts hold regardless.
Three things need the time. The Ascendant moves through the whole zodiac every 24 hours, so without a time it's a guess. The Moon travels about 13 degrees a day, which is enough to change its sign and every aspect it makes. And the houses, which say where in life a contact plays out, depend entirely on the time.
If one of you knows the time and the other doesn't, the comparison still works. Read the Moon and Ascendant contacts as provisional and everything else as sound.
What a chart comparison does not tell you
Synastry describes a dynamic, not an outcome. Two charts full of harmonious contacts belong to plenty of couples who have separated, and charts described as difficult belong to plenty who are still together after thirty years.
What it's good at is naming a pattern you already half recognise. If the same argument keeps recurring, a Mars square between two charts gives it a shape and a vocabulary. That's worth something. It isn't a prediction, and no chart contact obliges anyone to stay anywhere.

What if I don't know my birth time?
Enter the date and place and leave the time. The Sun, Venus, Mars and the outer planets are reliable without it. The Moon and Ascendant will be approximate, and we'll say so on the result rather than pretending otherwise.
Are some sun signs incompatible?
Not in the way magazine columns suggest. Sun sign pairing is one contact out of dozens, and it is routinely outweighed by the Moon and Venus. Two signs described as clashing can have an easy chart between them.
Can I compare charts with a friend or a family member?
Yes, and it often reads more clearly than a romantic comparison, because there's less riding on the answer. Moon and Mercury contacts are usually the interesting ones between friends.
We have very similar charts. Is that good?
It's comfortable, and it can be flat. Shared placements mean you understand each other quickly and share the same blind spots. Most people find the useful comparisons have both.
Why is there no compatibility percentage?
Because a single number would have to decide how much a Moon contact is worth against a Saturn one, and that depends on what the two people want. We show the contacts and what they mean instead.
